Charleston was founded in 1670 and has survived an earthquake, epidemics, and two wars (The American Revolution and The Civil War). Needless to say, it's an old city. In fact, aside from the cars and people in modern-day attire, the city looks like an 18th century town - cobblestone streets, horse carriages and all.
Do You Believe in Ghosts?
Of course, as is common with such historic cities, Charleston has an abundance of "ghostly activity" - in fact, it's known as one of America's most haunted cities. Whether or not you are a believer, the ghost tours are nonetheless entertaining and informative - you'll find you're learning history without even knowing it! At about fifteen bucks, they are a bit more expensive than a movie ticket, but much more exciting: you can tour the "haunted" jail (built in 1702), visit the old graveyards, or even stop by the infamous dungeon where Civil War prisoners were once trapped. If ghosts aren't your thing, you can comfortably tour the city on a horse-led carriage ride. Either is a fun way to learn about the city.
Shop Till You Drop
For shopaholics, downtown Charleston boasts a range of local stores as well as national chains such as Gap, Express, Banana Republic, Abercrombie, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Sales are abundant, so keep an eye out for bargains!
Dig Into Delish Dishes
If you're hungry, Charleston offers a range of restaurants serving practically anything you can imagine. Seafood, of course, is prominent, but you can also find great steaks, wings, salads, and burgers. Although popular chain restaurants can be found throughout the city, the locally-owned dining spots offer authentic Charleston ambiance and provide visitors the chance to experience something new.
Party Till the Sun Comes Up
As for the happening hot spots, there are too many to name. There's a pub and/or dance club on pretty much every corner, but some of the most frequented destinations include Wet Willy's, Vickery's, City Bar, and the Rooftop Terrace (a rooftop bar overlooking the city).
Relax at the Beach
Finally, for beachgoers, the two main beaches are Folly Beach and Isle of Palms. Both are about 10 minutes from downtown Charleston. Although they tend to get crowded during the hot summer months, they are often less crowded than the Florida coasts.
Overall, Charleston makes a great destination for pretty much everyone. Whether you love the nightlife and love to boogey, live to shop, or simply want to relax at the beach, Charleston's the town for you. The people are friendly, the food is delicious, and the beaches are great - what more could you want?
